Vintage sterling silver and marcasite swallow brooch. Edwardian or Victorian style.

Small, sterling silver, Edwardian- or Victorian-inspired pin depicting a trio of swallows in flight. This brooch likely dates from the 1980s/1990s.
Hallmarks: stamped to back "925".
In great vintage condition with rollover clasp secure and working well.
Approximate measurements: 1 1/4" long x 1" high; 3.2g.
In Edwardian and Victorian jewellery, the swallow symbolized faithful love, loyalty, and safe homecoming. Because these birds are known to mate for life and return to the exact same nesting spots every year, the motif was heavily used in sentimental lockets and brooches given to loved ones embarking on journeys.
Marcasite jewellery (usually now made from pyrite) rose to popularity when diamonds were banned from public display in Switzerland in the 18th century and the scintillating effect of the darkly glittering stones had an effect similar to diamonds, especially by candlelight. Marcasites experienced a resurgence when Prince Albert died in 1861 and Queen Victoria deemed the dark stones in keeping with mourning attire.
