Vintage, large, Victorian-style sterling silver and marcasite snake brooch. 9g. Love. Gothic. Goth. Unisex.

Small, sterling silver, Victorian-inspired pin depicting a sinuous serpent, with over 170, Pavé-set marcasites. The edges of the snake and the back of the brooch bear gold gilding.
Excellent, well cared for vintage condition with lovely patina and all stones present. Rollover clasp in great working condition.
For Victorians, snakes were symbols of eternal love, fidelity, and devotion, spurred by Prince Albert's gift to Queen Victoria of a serpent engagement ring with emerald-set head, ruby eyes, and diamond accents. They represented wisdom, protection, and the endless cycle of life.
Marcasite jewellery (usually now made from pyrite) rose to popularity when diamonds were banned from public display in Switzerland in the 18th century and the scintillating effect of the darkly glittering stones had an effect similar to diamonds, especially by candlelight. Marcasites experienced a resurgence when Prince Albert died in 1861 and Queen Victoria deemed the dark stones in keeping with mourning attire.
Hallmarks: stamped to back "925".
