1990 Victorian revival, sterling silver & marcasite horse brooch with ruby eye. Full hallmarks. Made in Ireland.

Small, sterling silver, Art Deco inspired pin depicting a rearing pony, with 22 pavé-set marcasites and what I believe to be a ruby (or possibly garnet) eye (I don't have the means to test gems, I'm afraid!).
Hallmarks: stamped to back with maker's mark "ISJ" (for Irish Souvenir and Jewellery Shop) Dublin assay stamps, date letter "E" for 1990.
Condition: Missing one marcasite stone; otherwise in great vintage condition with rollover clasp secure and working well.
Approximate measurements: 3cm high x 2cm wide; 2.6g.
Marcasite jewellery (usually now made from pyrite) rose to popularity when diamonds were banned from public display in Switzerland in the 18th century and the scintillating effect of the darkly glittering stones had an effect similar to diamonds, especially by candlelight. Marcasites experienced a resurgence when Prince Albert died in 1861 and Queen Victoria deemed the dark stones in keeping with mourning attire.
Excellent, well cared for vintage condition with lovely patina -- there is one marcasite gem missing to the horse's torso.
